Mediemyndigheten — Sweden¶
Sweden's media authority, Mediemyndigheten, classifies cinema content on a single, unusual criterion: psychological harm — can the content cause fear, anxiety or distress in children of a given age?
Rating tiers¶
Btl (barntillåten — approved for all children), 7, 11, 15
There is no formal 18 tier.
Why Sweden is different¶
Coarse language, nudity or drug references are not per-se disqualifiers in the Swedish system. Content that would raise a rating elsewhere may pass as barntillåten if it isn't frightening — and conversely, an intense but "clean" spot can rate higher in Sweden than anywhere else.
What this means for ads and trailers¶
Sweden is the clearest proof that ratings don't translate between countries. A multi-market campaign needs each market judged on its own criteria — mapping tiers one-to-one gets Sweden wrong in both directions.
