FSK — Germany¶
The FSK (Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle der Filmwirtschaft) is Germany's film classification body. Although organised as industry self-regulation, an FSK rating becomes legally binding once issued — cinemas must enforce the age limits.
Rating tiers¶
| Tier | Meaning |
|---|---|
| FSK 0 | Released without age restriction |
| FSK 6 | Released to ages 6 and up |
| FSK 12 | Ages 12 and up; 6–11 admitted with a parent |
| FSK 16 | Ages 16 and up |
| FSK 18 | Adults only (Keine Jugendfreigabe) |
How FSK reasons¶
FSK classification centres on developmental harm: could this content impair the development of children in a given age bracket? Works refused by FSK fall outside the system entirely and are handled by other bodies.
What this means for ads and trailers¶
Trailers and advertising shown in German cinemas must fit the audience of the screening they precede. A trailer that would rate FSK 16 cannot play before an FSK 6 feature — and finding that out after booking is expensive.

The DCProof Age Report estimates the FSK tier of your ad or trailer before submission, with timecoded findings per criterion.
